Barnsley Cadets Help Open New RAF Association Memorial

On Saturday September 21st, 2019, seven cadets from 148 (Barnsley) Squadron attended a service dedicated to the reveal of an RAF Centenary bench at Penistone Grammar School. A ceremonial flag, funded by the community of Penistone, was disclosed, commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

Hymns were sung by those who attended and a locally-based brass band played in honour of all those who have had association with the RAF since it’s establishment in 1918. The Principal of the Grammar School, Paul Crook, expressed his sincere delight to be in attendance of such a service and especially the fact that it was taking place at Penistone.

To summarise, the event was a collective celebration although strong reminder of lives which have been affected by the Royal Air Force – as we remembered especially those with disastrous endings. It was contrastingly emotional yet great to see Penistone contribute further to the remembrance of all those involved with the Royal Air Force since it’s foundation just over one-hundred years ago; with a phenomenally observed bench-opening and flag-raising event. It lasted just a couple of hours yet it boasted such a strong message of how remembrance of those involved with the RAF over the last one-hundred years will continue to live on.

In conclusion, the day was – in our opinion – well worthy of attendance as we individually felt a sense of pride amongst ourselves that we and our Squadron are ensuring the memory of all involved in the Royal Air Force since 1919 will continue to live on. A picture of pride and resemblance was painted for Penistone through such a fine attendance.
